Itinerary - Mfereji village homestay 2 days/1 night tour
Day 1 – In the morning we take a scenic drive from Arusha to Mfereji. On the way we can visit a local Maasai market (on Saturdays). Once we reach the village, we will be welcomed by the local Maasai elders, followed by a traditional welcome song and dance. At certain times, one of the dancers will jump up and down gracefully. The jumps are several feet high!
Then we take a walk around the village. You will learn about the history, rituals, tools and the everyday life in a Maasai village. You will have an opportunity tojoin the women in fetching water or milking the cows, or join the men for a lesson in throwing spears. Learn about the jewelry making and enjoy some jewelry shopping if you like. Another highlight will be a bush walk to discover native plants and their usage in traditional medicine by the Maasai people.
As the time approaches when the cattle are coming back into the village from grazing in the fields, enjoy the sound of the cows, the cattle bells, the whistling of the cattle herders and birds singing in the distance which creates an unforgettable experience of its kind.
You will enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by a chef, food is similar to what you would typically get on a safari. Example of traditional meals including rice, ugali (maize porridge), potatoes, vegetables, meat (beef or goat) and Maasai chai (tea).
Your day will be rounded up with a fire making session and bonfire while the men and women will entrance you with their guttural songs by a giant bonfire throughout the evening.
Although there is so much to see around you, don’t forget to look up after dark - you will see such a beautiful array of star formations, not usually visible in the western world. Take your time and make a wish on a shooting star.
Settle into your tent for the night. The accommodations options are as follows: there are two Maasai huts with modern beds, one hut has one big bed and the other hut has two beds. The authentic Maasai huts are also available for these who wish to try and experience to sleep on cow skins as a true Maasai. For a larger group of more then 4 people there are tents with mattresses available .
At night, it would not be unusual to hear a lion roar or a hyena laughing as the village shares the same habitat as the wild animals. But don’t worry, we have Maasai warriors staying up as the night guards. At night the entrances to the boma are secured by thorny cut branches to prevent wild animals from entering the village to take the cattle.
Day 2 - Rise and shine in the village and help out as much as you like with daily tasks, such as milking the animals, collecting water or firewood, you can learn how to carry the firewood on your back like Maasai women do. Remember to take plenty of photographs to keep your memories alive.
Breakfast and lunch are included.
Climb aboard the car to drive back to Monduli, to experience all the happenings of the Maasai market! You can witness men trading animals and women selling food and jewelry. Walk around, ask questions, and don’t forget to purchase your Maasai tyre shoes! This colourful experience puts you at the heart of Maasai life. Head back to Arusha in the evening.
We can arrange special tours if you wish to attend exciting Maasai ceremonies. Please contact us to see what is available! We are always in touch with our fellow Maasai in the neighboring villages so we know about all of the activities happening in the area.
